Joe's QD Nymph

I wanted a pattern that would fish like the Copper John but with a buggier, more natural appearance and would be faster to tie. This pattern is interesting in that it more closely resembles a hare's ear than the Copper John, but clearly isn't either one.

Hook: I use any heavy nymph hook from size 18 to about 14, sometimes larger or smaller, most likely smaller
Head: Gold Bead to match
Weight: Fine lead wire
Thread: Beige, Tan or Brown, 6/0
Tail: Brown or black goose biots
Rib: Fine gold or silver wire
Abdomen: Harlene Quick-Descent dubbing (any color. I prefer black, copper, silver and light olive)
Wing Case: Pearl Mylar
Thorax: Peacock herl
Wing: Partridge

In general, if fish aren't feeding on top, I will have the best action if I go straight to the bottom. I rarely use sinking lines so, I will often tie both weighted and unweighted versions of standard flies (I use red thread to identfy the weighted ones). This fly has everything heavy I can think to tie onto a hook but still looks like a fly, thanks to the quick-descent dubbing. I love the stuff. It's like dubbing with fine steel wool, which sounds aweful. But, in reality, it grabs right onto the thread and stays there. If anything, you have to be careful not to dub it too tightly.

Fish this fly however you want. I often tumble it through fast riffles, casting straight upstream and stripping as the fly drifts directly toward me.
