Letort Hopper - Fly Pattern

You don't hear a lot of people doing backflips over this classic pattern these days, but I for one, consider it a must-have pattern.

Hook: Any long, lightweight hook
Head: Deer Hair trimmed like a Muddler
Thread: Beige, Tan or Brown, 3/0
Abdomen: Fine yellow dubbing
Underwing: Turkey wing - mottled
Wing: Deer hair

I've had people laugh at me when I tell them that I pretty much always use the Muddler Minnow as a hopper. But, in reality the Muddler Minnow makes a great hopper. First, it looks as much like a grasshopper as most of the other hopper patterns out there. And, it floats like a bobber. The Letort Hopper is proof that I'm not crazy. Tie the Letort Hopper with a small turkey wing tail and a gold tinsel body and what do you get? That's right! A muddler minnow. The defense rests.

The cool thing about the Letort Hopper is that it's pretty easy to tie and trout HAMMER it. And, I imagine it makes a darn good substitute for a muddler minnow should the need arise.
