Truckee River:
Truckee River: Private Trout Club Section:

Near the Boca Res. inlet, there is a 2-1/2 mile stretch of the Truckee River that is owned by some snob fly fishing club in San Francisco. They protect this water with a vengance, especially during the main season when everybody and their brother would love to take a shot at the truly massive rainbows that it holds. It might just be a good thing that the area is so well protected since fish don't grow to such proportions by heavy fishing pressure.

The thing that bugs me is that they believe that they own the river, which is patently untrue. What they own is the land down to the high water mark. So, if any schmo wants to roll up his pants and wade on in, it is perfectly legal. But, don't even think about making landfall because you could end up being taken away in handcuffs.

That said, the end of the season dry action was OFF THE HOOK today! I'm not suggesting that anyone go there but, four, 20+ rainbows in an hour on #20 BWO's certainly my idea of a good time. Read the regs!

Truckee River: Mayberry Park:

This section skunks me pretty often. I prefer not to admit that the problem could be well... me. I fish this water a lot since it is about five minutes from home. In the spring it is simply too high to be much fun but, later in the summer, I usually start hitting small browns along the weedy banks. Late in the season, if the water is really low (which you can pretty much count on), the deeper pools will tend to hold nice fish. This is when schools of Mountain Whitefish numbering many dozen at times, will stack up and watch while I throw everything I have at them.

Some people believe I am lame for going after the Whitefish. "Trashfish!" they say. To that I have to wonder who says? I love to catch them. They're silvery with a small, downturned mouth like a bonefish. I have released every fish I've ever caught anyway. In some ways, I think it's a more pure form of the sport to chase Whitefish. Afterall, they are native to the river. Rainbow and brown trout are not.

Truckee River: North Edison Way:

Several times throughout the summer the NDOW stocks this area with tons of trout. I think they stock Mayberry Park too. I won't tell you where my honey holes are to aviod being beaten by my cousin who first took me there but, suffice to say that if you like to catch lots of trout that will fall for anything you show them, check the NDOW stocking schedule and head out.

There are great places to fish the Truckee River for almost its entire length. There are many websaite that give the what, when and how to fish the Truckee. I am certainly no authority. I tend to fish about a half a dozen spots over and over. I know of a few really great spots that get almost no fishing pressure, but you'll have to find those on you own.
